HOW ARE AURORAS FORMED?

How are northern lights formed?

It was the 14th of January 2022, the night every
person present in Stockholm actually in the whole of northern Europe would remember. Bright
dazzling green light shining up in the sky, like the beautiful sparkle in the dark
sky, yes it was auroras. It was among the strongest auroras witnessed. We could
even see dancing red auroras in the sky. It is a rare phenomenon that occurs
once or twice a year.

But how are the auroras formed?

They are the result of the disturbance of the earth’s magnetic field. Well! To Make it interesting look at the
image below:

When the sun gives out strong
and hot solar flames(winds) they are so large that they reach earth and
even move beyond it. These can cause severe harm to the people living on the
earth, but there is a shield that protects us from these solar winds. This shield
is nothing but our earth’s magnetic field. This is what the earth’s magnetic field looks
like:

The hot solar flames
traveling from the sun to the earth get blocked by the magnetic field. There are
several gases in the sky, the solar waves and the gases form the electric field at the poles of the earth that gives out different colors. It’s just that simple.

Where you can see the northern
lights?

They are mostly observed at the north and south poles and in countries close to them. Norway, Finland, Sweden,
Iceland, Canada, Russia, and Scotland. Unfortunately, northern lights are not
visible from INDIA, as it is close to the equator.

At what season you can see
these lights?

Starting at the end of the august month and till April is the good season to have a beautiful view
of the auroras.

It is a short activity of
about 30 minutes or 2 hours. Everyone must experience this unusual yet magical
scientific activity of earth once in a lifetime!

It’s always insane all those
colors appearing in the space from just a chemical reaction. There are
hundreds of secrets out there but we humans are still incapable of
understanding them. We must dive deep into the new things and explore, and expand
our vision above the daily chores.
